    Question Kid's Desk

    Howdy All

Quick questions for all you experienced woodworkers ...

What would be a good alternative to pine for a kids desk top ? My concern is that the pine will not last particularly well with a youngster using it and will be well dented in short order.

    Thanks

    Steve

    Steve,

Radiata Pine is cheap and unless you are planning on a large family, the kids desk only needs to last a relatively short time.

If the denting was only going to happen to the top then you could design a replaceable insert or make a thick top so it can be planed/sanded back when the denting becomes unsightly.

If the rest of the desk is likely to become dented due to rough play, then the rest of your house will also suffer so some education in furniture appreciation might help.

Cheap, Easy to work, Kidproof and easy to work?
Try Eucalyptus delegatensis, obliqua and regnans (Tasmanian Oak)
