Default Kitchen cabinets - role of glue

In the 1990s I was taught how to make ‘whitewood’ cabinetry by an older and very particular builder. By whitewood I mean melamine faced pyneboard/mdf cabinetry for kitchens etc. His advice at the time was not to use glue, and if ever I heard someone talking about using glue then I would know I was dealing with a someone who had no idea.

Is this advice still good? I know there have been advances in glue since, and I actually have a bottle of Titebond Melamine glue which I haven’t got round to evaluating yet.

So is using glue considered good practise by kitchen makers today?

If so, what’s the best way to use it ? I was thinking of using pineboard screws in the same way as I always have, but maybe less of them, with glues on the edges. I’m not sure I see an advantage, but worth asking I’m sure.

    Cheers

There are glues that will bond to melamine but in the general run of kitchen cupboard manufacture glue is still not used. Normal method of construction is to tack nail components with nail gun and then secure with particle board screws. If the cabinets are dowelled then glue is used.

    Absolutely true, China and Rustynail.

However, glue will keep future spillages out of the joints.

Glue is 100% unnecessary, 50mm screws is all you need.

I think we will agree to disagree on this one, Elan.

It has absolutely nothing to do with structural strength; a lot to do with the wife appreciation factor.
