Kitchen Island Butchers Block

My goal for this year was to make a Kitchen Island for my daughter. Simple enough project for the Wongo's but for the Drongo woodworkers like me not so simple.

It has taken almost a year to source the timber, I prefer recycled timber. Sure, I could have gone in with an open checkbook but the half the thrill in woodworking for me is the preparation and search for the wood and materials.

I still have some more wood to get for the legs and some of the pieces for the cutting board.

But what I really want some info on is where I can get some information on what I would call stockyard buttons to fill the dowel holes. This stockyard, colonial, rustic look is what I am trying to achieve.

So rather then reinventing the wheel, can you purchase them or do you have to make them. Hope this request sounds ok or is it as clear as mud.

You can get buttons from Bunnings, they sell them in packs of 4 usually, made out of pine and easily stained to suit. I seem to remember 2 sizes, but if they don't suit your dowel size, they take 5 mins to make on the lathe.

I met Big Splinter at the Toowoowmba BBQ and realized that I had met him previously at TeeJays BBQ early in the year.

Thanks Tom ( Big Splinter ) for all your help and pointing me in the right direction. this is a great forum and I have met some really nice people who I hope our friendship can advance from here.

ps. I invited a friend of mine to come to the Toowoomba BBQ and I thank everyone one there for making Jim welcome, he had a great day and think I may have created a monster.

Not to forget Neil ( Dai Sensai ) He was the driver and tour guide. especially when we passed some trees. I look at a tree as a greenies paradise, Neil looks at it through the bar of a 72 inch Alaskan chain saw.

You think that's bad, I've know Tom for years, and I didn't recognise him at either event
