Knobs
My apologies if this is not in the correct area of the forum - I have placed it in the general category for widest coverage.
Having tried to find plastic knobs [wing, tri, star knobs] for bolts [male and female] locally - you would have thought I was asking for the impossible.... Well, I have had some success from an unexpected source - the local Chandlery - they have imperial wing type and a multi faceted star type of bolt available [stainless] which are suitable for most jigs - they also work well with non stainless T-nuts. They call them "Bimini top thumb screws" which appear to be used on small power boat canopies. Only male type knobs are available and they were not aware of any female type within their trade.
Hope this helps out, especially as you tend to end up chasing this sort of thing on a weekend.
Regards,
Bob

Bunnings (Morayfield) sell both male and female knobs. I think they are called tri-wheels.

Thanks Rocker - good to know - our nearest Bunnings is Hervey Bay - obviously must be too far away from anywhere - they did a Schultz on me - "I know nothing, I see nothing ......." and I should add.... "I will do nothing ....to help". Have been there on a number of occasions - mostly forgetable

Our own Ian007 has a range of knobs too. Naturally Al is the biggest knob we own, but I don't think his goat likes him going out too much.
Boring signature time again!

Some sources for knobs & handwheels:
Dana-Ridge P/L
www.dana-ridge.com.au
and Tea Transmissions
www.tea.net.au
Both have an extensive range, metric threaded or untapped, but you might get a bit of a shock at the prices.
Then there is Professional Woodworkers Supplies with a range with imperial threads. A very good firm to deal with.

And Timbecon also have a small range with imperial threads.Brian

Unbelievable - Tea Transmissions is only 17km South of where I live - I had never even heard of them. Many thanks for the other suppliers also. I will also need to check with Ian 007 as I would [naturally] prefer to support one of our own.

Bob

Thanks for the tip.
Elesa (Italy) do make a great range of standard machine elements, including knobs, handles, etc, stocked or sourced by dana ridge locally. Male or female threads available, brass or stainless, etc, etc.

Elesa catalog is worth a browse.
I am a bit partial to the Ergostyle range:
http://www.elesa.com/en/ergostyle.htm
I wanted metric to stay compatible with my festo saw, as the parallel guide costs a ridiculous amount and I thought I might make one and some other bits for the guide rails as well as a router table. Bunnies only have cheap looking imperial thread triwing knobs made of cheap looking plastic that looks like it will crack and fall apart.

is a front for dana ridge. Free shipping for new customers, main problem is they are used to suppling industrial customers, so have minimum quantities. The blurb claims next day shipping - depends on if they have in stock what you want. Had to buy 10 knobs (actually engineering plastic M6 wing nuts with brass threads, since I couldn't find a generic Festo knob) at $5 each, but figure I'll be able to use them. Took a month to arrive, because they were a special order ?ex Italy. Perhaps other companies that sell the same sorts of gear for machine tools could sell smaller quantities. Still need some handles if I decide to rebuild an old B&D workmate (shame it would be cheaper to toss it and get a new one).
BTW Capral still sells aluminum sail track and the Capral tech person can email the technical drawings (I have them) with full dimensions for the two sizes of sail track.
