    Default Laguna Equipment

    Hi All,

I am about to set up my "retirement" shed and have completed a fairly comprehensive review of my wish list. The toys include:

    Laguna 10" Platinum table saw
    Laguna 14-12 bandsaw &
    Laguna 18-36 lathe

I have visited Greg Machinery in Brisbane for a close look at the machines and have been given a thorough briefing on each one by the very helpful staff. I have also read quite a few reviews. However, I would really appreciate comments from anyone who has bought any of this equipment recently for a "first hand" comment with respect to performance and supplier support.

    Cheers,

    Graeme.

I've been using in commercial manufacturing the 14/12 and the platinum for 3 years now put a lot of vic ash through them and neither have missed a beat. I did spend heaps on blades for them have the resaw King tct and various flai and Leuco for the ts. I have the earlier model with less horsepower so the larger motor would be good although saying that I've only bogged it down ripping a small13"dia green piece of Blackwood .
as to the lathe only used it at demo weekend and there were some casting issues(slight misalignment didn't affect the lathe performance more a cosmetic issue)which were going to be fixed in the following imports. but it ran true speed was easily controllable and compared well to my large jet lathe. again it wasn't a great deal of use I had so hopefully someone with more can help.
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything, but they
bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs .

    Hi Graeme
i have the 14/12 and the Harvey saw which is the Laguna Platinum in different clothes

My 14/12 is 2 years old and doesn't have the newer switch or foot brake

A capable dust collector is essential with these machines, and don't forget the safety equipment such as ear muffs and breather if you use mdf or exotic woods

I do find that the jointer/thickneser is one of the most used machines in my workshop so my advice would be to consider getting one if you don't have them already

    Have a great retirement

    Rob

In the general sales 101 rules, you never speak ill of your competition.

When I was looking for a Joiner / Planer (or Joiner / Thicknesser) there were SEVERAL sales people, from different companies, that basically said to beware of Laguna's lack of service. They were speaking of the US so I don't know how that applies to you blokes.

At school we had a, what is now a 15 year old, 20 inch Laguna band saw. The Laguna seemed to be "down" about half the time while the General band saws were rarely down. I think that the General Band Saws were about the same age or a bit newer. We had an onsite machine technician that was superb a keeping our equipment running properly.

Does this information apply world wide? I don't know. I can only relay what I've observed.
