Default To laminate or not to laminate.

    Hi all

First time post so I'd like to say this site is a little goldmine of information.

I need some help. I've decided - since not being able to find something pre-made that I'm happy with - to make some storage cabinets and a workbench in my garage. I've drawn up a design that I'm happy with but need to know what materials to use?

I'm thinking of 18mm bare particle board at the moment. I was initally thinking of 18mm white melamine, but I don't want the whole thing to be white, I want a darker colour. Do I use a combination of white melamine and bare particle board (ie - build the carcass out of melamine and only use bare p.board for the doors and laminate them in a darker colour?). If I do this the outside 'sides' of the cupboards will be white which I don't want. How do I overcome this?

Malamine comes in heaps of colours these days. It will prolly by ok for cupboards, but you'll prolly need more structural strength for a workbench.

    Welcome aboard BTW.

...ok thanks for tip, but whereabouts do you buy melamine in different colours, I've only ever seen white (Bunnings).

Dunno really. We get off cuts at the woodies shed. I thought they came from Bunnings. :dunce: I know they have different coloured vinal wrap boards.

    How about here? http://www.lifetime.net.au/coloured_melamine.htm

And there is alwas someone else on the WWF who has already talked about it.

Have a look at http://www.laminex.com.au. You'll find whichever colour you want, and a list of suppliers.

    Good luck
