Thread: laminate trimmer as horizontal borer?

My initial reaction is NO WAY! Most horizontal drills spin, at most, a couple of thousand RPM, trimmers go at 22k RPM. I'm no expert, but that just sounds dangerous.

I have used my laminate trimmer in a jig many times but only with trimmer bits in it. You would not get a very deep hole with a trimmer bit. The last time I used the set up I wanted to put some very small biscuts in a picture frame and I was unable to use the biscuit joiner. I set up the trimmer with a 3mm bit in it and pushed the corners up to the bit. it did a great job.

If possible I'd use a router that can take 1/2" bits - you can get suitable bits with cutting edges up to 2" (50mm) long, 1/4" bits seem to max out at 1"(25mm) and are pretty flexable.

Carbatec were selling the 1400 watt Triton for ~$150 and may still have some for that price, which is $100 less than a godd trimmer.
