Lane Poole and forestry management
There seemed to have been a number of posts where the general issues of managemnet come up and the underlying motivations of greeies vs workers , woodchips vs trrees etc etc.
Some years ago i was doing research into enviromental issues for a documentry and found out about Lane Poole.
http://www.calm.wa.gov.au/tourism/lane-poole_who.html
Who was the first conservator of Forests in Australia.
His story is interesting and a lot of the issues he was dealing with are the same issues we are still delaing with today.
How do we run forests as a business and earn income whilst also conserving our forests for the future. HOw do we satisfy human need and use wood but not leave our kids without wood or stand of pine only ?
I would like to ask if anyone here knows much about the work of Lane Poole or has other info about these topics ?
thanks

Hi John,
Well I have to admit to ignorance on Lane Poole but would love to hear what you discovered coz it seems like there's got to be a better way. Look forward to your elucidation & edification

Hi John and Jamie,
I have just come back from a few days at Lane Poole Reserve. It is great to have a resource like this so close to Perth. Full house signs were out very early into the long weekend. Very relaxing ... but you've probably got some equally good spots on your side of Oz too.
Current management of the Reserve is to be congradulated on their work in preserving the area. Large stands of pine have just been removed (clear felled) hopefully to fund the presevation of the area and other's like it. Also noticed that Rally Australia is getting ready to use the roads in the area in November. At the other extreme ... a walking track ... 900km+ ... (The Bibbulmun Track) meanders through the area on its way from Albany towards Perth. The Murray river (much shorter) also wanders through the area.
I too would like to hear more about what you discovered. Also to get to know more about the issues surrounding Forrestry management ... especially as it has become such a significant issue for us woodies.

OK thanks for the response Barney and Interwood..
All I know about Lane Poole is that he was Australia's first conservator of forests and was directly responsible for the forestry act of 1918.
A lot of his recomendations were not taken on but a few were and it was the beginning of some kind of control over what and how much was logged and cleared.
I have no othe rinfo and any detail and was kinda hoping someone else may have.
There area few places named after him and like modern conservation, i believe Lane felt he was pursuing a battle of busniness vs conservation.
I am not a conservationiest per se, in that i bleieve human need and the enviroment need to work togther but i alos dont support mass destruction of wilderness of the denegration of those who need to earn a living.
I think Lane represents a 'rationalist ' approach and I hope to find out more in the future.
regards
John
