Default Lift up door using concealed hinges

I'm designing some storage for the laundry and want some lift up doors (about 600mm wide x 450mm).

I'll be using 16mm melamine particle board to reduce the weight, perhaps 12mm if possible.

Has anyone used concealed (self closing) hinges to accomplish this rather than a lid stay ?
I would like to avoid using 175 degree hinges because it might be too high for the wife to pull back down. 110 would be nice if there was one that could hold the weight of the door.

My only other option would be to use the 175 degree hinge and put a handle on the inside of the door, so that when opened, it is low enough to reach.

    Thoughts anyone?

    Mike

What about using some gas struts from a car wrecker.

I've seen somewhere a system where you lift up the door and then slide it back into the cabinet, for the past hour I've been trying to find the site where I saw them but no luck. Someone else may have seen them.

Have a google for "barristers bookcase" or "lawyers bookcase"
They have lift up slide back doors.

Rockler have them on their online catalogue, made for entertainment units which hide the TV.

Mike Three options. I know you didnt want a stay, but a 90deg lift up flap/stay, which will lift up and stay at 90deg to the cabinet will work. Or a single pivot sliding door, which will lift up and back into the cabinet. Or for something completly different and very smart, and great for a laundry is a plastic, timber or aluminium roller shutter system. Easy to install and works a treat. The swmbo will love it. All are avail from large cabinet suppliers like Hafele.

    Thanks for the replies..

The gas strut would be much the same as a stay,
although with such a light door (compared to a car door) it might make it hard to close.

The slide door mechanism might be the go as it then allows access to the storage above.
    Will look up barristers bookcase's..

I was looking through the leevalley hardware catalogue and found these hinges.
Anyone know of a local supplier that might have these?

I am looking for a similar type hinge for a oven installation.

Miele company has a real nice accessory box that matches the ovens but only has a 14 inch opening when open.

The front pulls out a couple inches and slides up.

Try googling for a pocket door hinge. Hafele and Lincoln Sentry carry them should imagine a number of other places do also. Try the two above also for the hold up hinges.

Mike, I assume that you are referring to an overhead cabinet and not a lift-up benchtop? Lift-up doors are all the rage on overhead cabinets at the moment. Hafele & Hettich sell these at all good sized hardwares.

If you are referring to a lift-up benchtop similar to a yacht freezer lid then have a look in Whitworths. They have a double tapered spring mechanism that when in the open position needs to be pressed mid-point to enable the spring to bend and the top to be closed. When the lid is lifted the spring goes from bent to straight and locks out holding the lid up.

I reckon your referring to the first solution...Hafele or Hettich have the answer.
