No references or graphs to back it up.... but....
If you go to a timber yard and say that you have a 14' x 18' room that you want to refloor, and they are selling timber by 300 wide boards at $x per meters, then they will quote in lineal meters to give the coverage... but if you take each piece of timber and lay them end to end, then you will end up with x meters of linear timber.

Better that you buy in square meters or even cubes.

    IMO, buyer beware.
    Cheers,

Back to the other....Dad always talked about lineal (feet or metres) of total length required for a given floor especially when it required a number of widths to complete the floor, and linear referred to a measurment which has direction and magnitude as Bob says in science and maths.
