Default locking rebate v full width trench?

Hey, what is the benefit of a locking rebate for building a dresser carcass as opposed to using full width trenches?
Im talking about using veneered ply or particle board to build the carcass of a 9 drawer dresser. The plan (Aus Woodsmith 54) says to use the locking rebates to join the horzontals to the ends with the locking rebate. Then use full width trenches when putting the verticle dividers in.
Im wondering if its worth the extra effort of having to put the tongue on the end of all the pieces to make them fit.

IMHO there's no real benefit other than perhaps appearance. The disadvantage is that you have a weak little piece on the end tha can be easily broken off until it's all glued up.
