    Default Locking spindle moulder shaft

Hi, I have recently bought a cheap Chinese 5 in 1 with minimal instructions included.
I want to fit a nice little rebate head that can be set flush with the top of the spindle for deeper rebates.
By using the included recessed countersunk washer and a countersunk bolt.
I have contacted the distributor - no answer - but you get the service you pay for I suppose.

My problem is that to do that I have to remove the shaft locking nut which means I have to find another means of locking the spindle!
I have looked for a hole to insert a rod or a flat on the lower part of the shaft near the pulleys but so far no luck!

(N.B. This is not mine but it is the idea of the countersunk bolt and locking the spindle!)

    Any advice is very welcome!spindle.jpg

I think you will find it is not recommended to run the cutter at the to of the shaft.

Hi this is the bolt they sell to suit the cutter and it says in the picture, "Countersunk set screws are available in sizes of 14 x 40 mm or 16 x 40 mm for use when cutting over the block."
But I have no particular experience with this cutter!

You can, but you probably shouldn't. You can get pretty big rebating and trenching heads.

I was always taught to keep heads as low on the shaft as possible for:
    1) Maximum rigidity
    2) Minimal vibration
    3) Least potential for spindle wobble and potential bearing damage from cutter imbalance.

    What machine did you get?

Hmmm....can't see any obvious lock points from looking at pics...

How big do you want to rebate? Dimar have some pretty large heads Cutting Tools Australia - Spindle Moulder Cutters & Cutter Heads

Are you just trying to temporarily lock the shaft from spinning so you can tighten the countersunk screw bolt? Put the allen key in the bolt and tighten as much as you can. Get a lump of wood and give the end of the allen key a swift knock and that'll tighten it up good enough. Or you can try something like a strap wrench

Yes Kuffy, just trying to lock the saft to stop the cutter spinning.
I assumed there would be a locking mechanism built in.

I am just trying to make best use of the combi head I have.
I can hog out most of the rebate with the saw before cleaning up the rebate so shouldn't be a huge load on the head.
