Has anyone got any logs milled before?
Becuase my brother is a treelopper he knows alot of other treelopers and i sometimes go and look for wood for turning but there are big piles of large logs that could be milled and i know someone that gets logs milled by someone with a bandsaw mill for $60 but he takes the logs to him.
Has anyone else got logs milled by a mobile bandsaw mill before? and how much did it cost.
How long would and average sized log about 700-800 x 3m take to mill?

Most of the bandsaw mills are pushing to do more than a couple of M3 per day.

Leighd, there has been a lot of discussion on this topic in the past. A search for milling, millers, mobile, something like that, should turn up some stuff in the timber thread. Rates will vary a lot for travel, quantity and timber. Rates around $70.00/hr to $90.00/hr is quite normal but it depends on the job.
Here's a thread; http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=11210
A chainsaw slabber will knock up that amount of timber within an hour or two. Re-bandsaw mills and Lucas mills etc, its not that much timber for them once set up. I once went like buggery all day (12 hours) on a Bushmaster and we knocked up about 5 m3 of Jarrah but this was a very powerful and well setup machine with an excellent operator. Plus we were all ready for them and did all the drover's dog work for the miller. He basically was cutting continuously for 10 hours.
Plenty of other threads to look at. There's a number of guys on this forum with Lucas Mills who can give you better advice than me.

I paid $300 to have a 2 cubic metres of silky oak cut into slabs with a chainsaw mill.Later I came across an operator who would have cut the timber into rough sawn boards for about $500 per cubic metre. I have got no idea if these are good prices. I think though that $300 to cut the timber into slabs was good. I was happy to pay it. But at least with the timber in slabs I can cut what I need from them project by project. If had I had it cut into rough sawn boards I would have had to estimate what sizes of timber I would be wanting and in what proportions for a long time into the future.

I had 3.5 tonnes of yellow box and sugar gum milled into a multitude of workable sizes AND kiln dried for $750. That also entailed the collection and delivery.
It took a long time to do as the mill used my logs as chocks for a huge spotted gum log.
We ended up recovering over 90% from the logs after the kilning process, including one big slab.
The crowd is Australian Wood Recyclers in Seaford Melbourne. They also have a great stockpile of kiln dried bark to bark slabs at reasonable cost.

Hei Leigh,
I'm always on the look out for blanks so if your brothers ever have anything that you can't use I'd be interested in it.
Drop me a PM and I'll give you my direct e-mail.
Cheers
Paul
PS I'm in Southern River about 5 minutes from Kelmscott.
