Look how smart I am !!!
I have never made a secret mitred dovetail before so I attempted my first on and here are the photos.
This was prompted by a recent thread and my continuing insistance for people to give hand cut dovetails a go - drink my own medicine.
Sturdee also made a remark recently about telling people what he was going to do and then felt compelled to follow through.
So I took heaps of photos at every step of the way - gee I was proud until
It was doomed from the start wasn't it. I am mad at myself for not seeing the obvious but all is not lost, I did learn a few good techniques (apart from marking out)
I will post photos of my second attempt when I next get time.
Anyone got a recipe for humble pie?- Wood Borer

Or ...
You could just reinforce your mitre joint with biscuits, glue it with epoxy, and you will have saved yourself a lot of time and effort. But then, I realize that dark-siders get off on pain and humiliation, as Leopold von Sacher-Masoch discovered

Rob, I applaud your strength. Kudos to you for investing the time in true woodworking skill instead of jig building or "finding a better way". and kudos especially for letting us learn from a mistake. I'd give you 20 greenies if i could, but alas i can't give you any. but i will vote for woodborer in the "woodworking idol" competition.

Hi Rob, so would these be the Fred Flintstone Secret Dovetails??? Sounds like you had a good time and learnt lots. You are gamer than me, I haven't dared try dovetails yet.
cheers

I have conquered the most difficult part of the secret mitred dovetail exercise - building up the nerve to attempt it. The rest of it follows naturally with the odd hiccup along the way.
You should give the through dovetails a go - they aren't all that difficult. Just remember to mark them out correctly- Wood Borer

Borer,
I must admit the whole concept of the secret mitred dovetail is quite exciting.
It's the retrospectivity of it all that has the greatest potential.
I'm thinking of doing just one, keeping it somewhere casually obvious, so that I can explain to visitors:
"Oh that's a secret mitred dovetail, that's how I make every joint in timber, I only keep that lying around to explain that what looks like plain ordinary old butt joins are really as strong as they would have been if I'd glued them with epoxy!"
Or maybe you could send me one??
Cheers,
P

Good one, Mate! Top points for the attempt. I look forward to seeing the successful conclusion of this journey.
By the way, when I looked at the first pic, my mind played tricks on me. Have a look - imagine the pins are the cut out portion and vise versa - it's an optical illusion that makes the pins look "twisted". Can you see it? I actually have to concentrate to view it the correct way.
Well done - a twisted secret mitred dovetail joint - I bet it's a first!
