Default Looking for 10 mm fluted long lengths of dowel

    Hi.

I am just getting back into woodwork after many years break,I used to buy 1.8m long lengths of 10 mm fluted dowel, for $1 a length. Now I cannot find the same length with the flute-which helps a lot with gluing.Only the smooth lengths (at $3!! my how things have gone up!)

I see the little bags of short lengths, but these are very expensive, and to short,I
like to cut my own lengths.Looking to make some small table tops, and needing to join 6 by 1's and 7 by 1's.

If anyone in S.E QLD knows where I can buy such dowel, please let me know,

    Thanks Chris

It is easy enough to drag something sharp along then to relieve the hydraulic pressure when glueing. 2 or 3 flutes will do. They dont need many to work. I have used a gents saw with the dowel in the vice but even draging a sharpened nail down the side will do the job.

Might be easier (and safer) to mount the saw in the vise, and drag the dowel lengthwise across it. Since it isn't for esthetics, only a few flutes are needed, and imperfect is fine. Do the full length for each flute, and cut to length afterwards.

    Cheers,
    Joe

    Default For The Table.

    Hi Hotspur,
Why not become a bit more modern, & use the 3mm. Biscuits.
I understand they are very forgiving, & work very well.

If you really want to do the job without fuss or risk of slipping, drill a suitable size hole in a piece of wood and put a screw in so that the point just sticks out into the hole. After that it's just a matter of pushing the dowel through as many times as you like.
    Cheers,
    Jim
