Default Looking for more figured Silky Oak

I'm nearing completion of a piece which features figured Silky Oak for the drawer fronts and for reasons involving shame (don't ask!), I now need one more piece 280 x 200 x 20 dressed size.

It looks like Queensland (Northern?) Silky because it has that slight pink tinge rather than the darker yellow variety.

Any ideas on where I could source some?

Do you want it to look exactly like the one in the photos? I can supply some but it will be fully on the quarter cut and the postage will be more than the timber.

    Thanks Crocy,

Can you post a pic? I would prefer it to match but I can always use some more.

Hi Mick, I ran 4 quadrants through the saw and I got every other pattern except the swimming fish in your photos. I have had a big week, now too stuffed to lift another quadrant, but I will try some more tomorrow.

Thanks, Crocy. You've already gone to a lot of trouble for me. If you find a good sized stick figured like mine, I think you'll strike gold because it's a beautiful pattern for a feature.

Hi Mick, it's Maddie, dad took quite ill last night and is still in emergency with a GI tract bleed. He asked me to answer you, to tell you he is going to be out of action for a while depending on what they find. I hope you understand.

    Hi Maddie,

That's terrible news. Please pass on my thanks and best wishes to your dad and hope that he beats this setback and comes through stronger than ever.

Your dad was taking so much trouble to see if he could match the timber I was seeking. That's the mark of a kind man who cares for others and would go out of his way to help.

You should be, and almost certainly are, a very proud daughter.

Please pass on my best wishes to your dad, a true woodie.

    Maddie.
Typical woodie response - in hospital, hooked up to god knows what machine, but is still focused on wood, and says to his daughter " hey darl, can you just send this bloke a response on the forum". Crocky, get well soon!! and honestly, that is pure gold.

    Glider,

I may have what your looking for and be able to let crocky rest some. I have some boards 900 long x 450ish wide, and about 20/22mm thick. i have a piece already trimmed down which i will size up when i get home this morning.
it has grain pattern like this
    grain1.jpg
minus the green tinge, which isn't mould. Quick note to self and others, never use a coloured tshirt when using friction polish. no guesses to which colour i used.

not like this which shows the grain cut differently.

    Grain2.jpg

i'll post a photo of the piece in the morning. and im local to Elizabeth bay, not Oberon.

Thanks Fumbler. Your piece looks pretty good. I'll be back from the bush later next week with a piece to see if we have a match. I'll send you a PM when I arrive back in the big smoke.

Yes, Crocy has certainly shown his true colours; as has Maddie. Both of them have a run on spot in my team.

It's 6 days since you posted about your dad's GI tract bleed.
How is he (Old Croc) doing? Do you have an update on his condition you are willing to share?
    regards from Alberta, Canada

Hi Mick, Fumbler and Ian. I am ok, CAT scan showed nothing sinister, so they think I have something called Colitis, so after that they gave me a drug to do some clotting. After many more tests to check Red Cell count and Haemoglobin levels they said I need an urgent Colonoscopy to confirm that. Well urgent means next Tuesday, all the specialists and hospitals are booked out due to the Covid backlog.
So I felt reasonable yesterday and did about 20 odd boards, but the swimming fish eluded me. Just did a few more and came close. The first photo shows what is perfectly cut on the quarter and the second is as close as I can come to your photo. If it is close enough for you I will saw it to your dimensions.
Let me know when you can.
P.S. that bit from Fumbler looks like just plain backsawn to me, but photos are deceiving.
    Rgds,

Hi Mick, the pieces you show are cut somewhere between backsawn and quartercut. For someone trying to replicate that pattern, it would help to see the end grain of the pieces, to see what angle the medullary rays are running in relation to the cut faces.
Crocy probably has a good idea already, having already cut some bits.
Though for other curious minds it would help.

Great to hear you're up and about again, Crocy. I think Ironwood is onto something with the milling angle. Can we chase that one down first before you go to any more trouble than you have already? I'm about to post pics of the end grain.
