Default Looking for input re magnetic poster hangers.

OK, so I've had a dozen or so large astronomy related posters I've wanted to hang for quite some time now.

I've had little luck searching on-line for the plastic extruded channels that were popular in the 70's... they're either far too short (as in A4 page lengths, while I need them in the 1.2-1.3m range) or well 'n truly over-priced.

During my googling I noticed that most commercially used poster hangers - such as for shop windows - are magnetic nowadays and I suspect they'd be more suitable for what I want anyway. But I'm a tightwad and why buy when I can make?

The ceramic magnets I have to hand, 12x7mm, are probably a tad too thick for use in thin timber slats. The science lab, back in high school, had posters that were hung by the simple expediency of ripping a 1/2" dowel down the middle & re-gluing 'em onto the poster with a couple of small wire brads for strength.

I'd be happy with that sort of dimension, but not much larger. (Nor with glue or brads damaging the poster. )

I also want to cover the magnets/washers with felt or a protective tape to give some measure of protection to the poster paper. I'm guesstimating that this will add up to about 3mm separation between magnets & washers, or magnet pairs if I go that way.

I reckon 'tis a safe bet that I'm not the first member here to try this, so does any-one have any advice as to size/type of magnets, recommended spacing, type of protective tape, etc?

More than anything I'd like to have a ballpark figure as to how many to buy so I can do all the purchasing in one shopping expedition and get down to building without the need to waste several hours 'running back into town' due to poor guesswork.

    So... any suggestions?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Ebay has assorted size magnets that are rather cheap - the good ones (Rare earth) Mine were about 8-10 mm x 2 mm $ 3 and a bit posted - a dozen or so.

Rare earth magnets are the go for sure. I have hung a 600mm wide x 1800mm long photo using 3 x 10mm magnets.

12mm thick blackbutt header strip for either side I used a 10mm forstner bit spaced The 3 magnets about 50mm in from the edge and one in the centre. Glue in with titebond. It snapped shut pretty good.

made one the same to hang on the bottom to hold its shape and there is just a hint of edge curl in the middle. Not noticeable to anyone but me and not noticeable enough for me to redesign my hangers.

rare earth magnets I purchased from carrols woodcraft also available from Carbatec bought the magnets then bought the forstner bit a shade larger.

    cheers

So... about 250mm apart? Did you pair them with magnets or washers on t'other half of the strip?

Still, it gives me numbers to work with; even if I allow only 200mm spacings I should be able to hang all the posters with just three '100x packs' and still have some spares to play with.

    Thank you.

What about the plastic coated magnetic strip like that you find in fridge door seals. Stick to the dowel/ wood the entire length and the plastic would protect the poster nicely.

I like this idea and will probably do something similar one day.
