Looking to Start Veneering
I'm going to take my first crack at veneering some small panels for box lids in the near future. I've got a few pieces of veneer picked out and I'll be ordering some veneer softener today.
Second Wind Workshop: Thinking Through Some Design
Any good tips for a first timer experimenting with some small panels? I won't be taping any pieces this time around. For such small parts, is Titebond or Titebond III OK? I see myself doing more veneering in the future, so I'm not opposed to buying a better glue choice now.

Animal glue is the simplest and is easily repairable... in case your first attempts aren't brilliant.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Thanks. I've seen several references to using hide glue. I think I was always a little intimidated by the heating processes and the temperature checking...making sure it's not too cool or that it gets too hot ans starts cooking. How do you heat yours up? Could you use one of those small crock-pots? Obviously you wouldn't want to cook in it again.

By far the best 'glue pot' I've ever had is a wax pot used by beauty clinics. They have an adjustable thermostat that covers the correct temperature for heating glue. If you search the forum, I have written about these pots before. They turn up on eBay for very little money; this is the model I use.
Animal glue is virtually edible... it's what jelly (jello to you) and all related matter is made of..

So if the project doesn't turn out well, it will make for a nice snack!
I picked up some cold press glue for my first small attempts, but I bookmarked that e-bay page to come back to the melting pot when I'm ready to try hide glue. I saw the hide glue particles for sale at Woodcraft yesterday and talked to one of the guys there in the store. They have some classes coming up and one of the veneering classes will show how to use the hide glue with a press and the cold press glue with a vaccum bag.

Veneering
There are some excellent articles on veneering on the Decorative Wood Veneers Association website, they can be downloaded and give a valuable insight into the many aspects of veneering. On UTUBE there are also some great clips on using hide glue which makes the whole process make sense and easy to follow.
If you are a newby have a look at these and you will really enjoy what you can do with veneer.

I put my first veneer sheets under pressure with some softener tonight. Hopefully they'll come out nice and flat and ready to roll this next weekend.
