Default Looking for timber for axe handles

    Purchasing advice.

If I wanted to make handles 800mm long. Say Blackwood.

Should I buy a piece that I could cut 2-3 axes out of, or just a piece to cut 1 from? 🤔

Also looking for suppliers down here in the south (Tassie) so I can avoid the big chains and buy more durable pieces.

Depends on how many axe heads you have. Spotted gum also makes a nice axe handle.Attachment 515008

I would have thought that blackwood - acacia melanoxyn - was too soft for axe handles.

Traditionally, striking tools handles were made from spotted gum - corymbia maculata - but nowadays most handles stocked by BigChains are from imported hickory.

In Tasmania (only) handles were traditionally made from horizontal - Anodopetalum biglandulosum - but this is not available commercially.

Not if you only want to chop one block.

Agreed – straight grain Spotty has good spring and is super durable.

If you are swinging all day, Hickory. If you are just chopping fire wood or felling just a couple of trees, Spotty is fine.
Hickory has a bit more spring and your arms will thank you.

Blackwood is simply unsuitable for axe handles as said above Spotted Gum or Hickory, or just buy them here, will be less expensive Handles - Krugers since 1911
