Looking for woodworker -Brisbane- Speaker project
Hello, I've just moved to Brisbane from Vancouver Canada, and i've brought a very high end speaker kit with me. I'm looking for a local woodworker to build the cabinets. I have detailed plans, measurements, etc., for the project. These are rather special speakers, employing some interesting designs and extremely high end components and drivers. The plan calls for the cabinets to be made from MDF, to which i might veneer, but i'd also consider using real wood - the densest and heaviest available. The design is relatively straight forward. There are some interesting internal braces and shapes (it's a ported transmission line, for anyone who's into speakers). A few holes are required, as are some radiused corners. I have CNC machined MDF front plates for where most of the drivers go - which makes things easier if the project is to use MDF... but, i'd like to consider using real wood, as long as it's something that's as heavy as possible. I don't know much about Austrailian wood! What's the heaviest/densest stuff available down under? Is it pretty? If you're interested in a project like this, or know someone who might be, please drop me a line. Cheers, /Adam

Well you come to the country we have some of the most dense beautiful wood in the world!
Still wouldnt make the boxes from it tho, just veneer the mdf for best results.....................................................................

Spotted Gum speaker boxes would be pretty heavy I'd reckon. Quite a bit heavier than MDF.
Good looking timber with a cranky grain.
I'm sure E Maculata would agree.
On the downside, it's prone to tearout and blunts your tools really quickly.

Come and talk to Furniture Concepts in Brisbane, we have CNC machinery that will do the job. We specialise in veneered MDF substrate construction and solid timber.
I'd recommend using Jarrah, it's got a nice deep red colour and has a bit of weight to it. As far as the densest and heaviest timber in Australia, I wouldn't look further than Ironbark, but good luck trying to find someone to machine it for you.

Thanks for the responses, here's the kit
Here's the site for the company which i got the kit:
http://www.rawacoustics.com/
If you click 'HT8' down the left side, that's the kit i'm making. I got the upgraded crossover package.
I've had a lot of speakers over the years, and heard quite a number, and these are absolutely fantastic. Al Wooley, the designer, is a genius and has his speaker drivers custom made. They're some of the best speakers i've heard at any price.
Thanks again for the info,
Cheers,
/Adam

Soundman here
As far as materials for speaker cabinets that aren't being draged about the country side you can not go past MDF it is heavy, dead and dimensionaly stable. I machines and glues very well and can be venered.
Any form of solid timber is problematic for use as "functional material" in speaker boxes If solid timber is desired it is best to fit it as an attachment.
Ahh a transmissionline....... what comes goes arround comes around.... big transmissionline boxes were popular in the seventies.
Always happy to speak about speaker boxes, particularly if someone else is paying:eek:
MDF black laquered can look very cool with maybe some solid timber trim.
send me a PM or email via the board.
cheersAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
