Default I love my pencil holder...

Everyone has a jar or mug of pens on their workbench, right? I used to hate mine. The pens got mixed with the pencils. The mechanical pencils got squashed and broken. Short pencils got lost at the bottom, and jammed up the others. If the jar was too big, the pencils fell over, and if the jar was too small, it got full and jammed.

Well, I visited an art shop a while back, and they had big holders for the pencils, and the holders were filled with rice! This is the perfect idea for the workshop. Now I have made a nice big pen holder, with plenty of room, and the pens stay right where I put them. I have unofficial sections for pencils, pens, and even tweezers, popsticks, craft knives, etc. Nothing falls over, and everything stays in it's section, even though there's no dividers or anything. Actually, the rice works best when it's one big container, without dividers between sections. The pencils I use most stay at the front, right where i can find them easily.

It's awesome. Everyone should make one of these. Rice is cool.

What a good idea! I hope the rice doesn't attract any bugs.

At first I thought no way
But after giving it considerable thought (about four seconds)
That’s a brilliant idea, do I use short grain, long grain, or saffron rice.

    Cheers Matt,

    That is a good idea.

I suspect it may not be suitable in some sheds, not if keeping rust off the machinery is a daily battle... (my Katoomba shed springs to mind ) and I know for certain that in my current shed it'd soon end up as 90% wood chips.

    But still, they're minor peccadilloes...

I wonder if mixed bird seed would be a suitable substitute? We go through feed-bags of the stuff and I'm sure the ravenous li'l raptors wouldn't mind a handful of sawdust in their feeders...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Raw rice swells up in the gut so it might eliminate pests

I figured short grain was better, so I went with that, but you can probably use whatever you have. Some of the really slippery grains would be really cool. My shed is pretty well sealed, so no vermin inside, but that could be an issue in some sheds. Perhaps grains smell more to attract mice compared with plain white rice?

Man I know exactly what you're saying, I want my pencils to stand up when I'm working so I can see them, so I sat there and made tiny partitions like an idiot
    your idea is much better.

I have to share my shed with various lifeforms so although I really like the idea I think I'll have to think of something else.

Glass beads might be another option

Beat me to it Dave. Reading down the thread I was thinking of something that would not attract little critters.

Being able to blow or wash the sawdust and grinding residue out of it when required would be a bonus as well.

I've seen knife blocks made as an open box with bamboo skewers standing vertically and was wondering if that would work but glass beads would probably be better for round objects though the skewers work well with blades.

At the moment it is really a moot point as I currently subscribe to the theory of scattering several pens, pencils, tape measures, rulers and squares all round the workshop so that there is always one of each within easy reach when you need it.
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

There’s a special special kind of very green stuff that florist use for flower arrangement.
    But I can’t think what it’s called [emoji849][emoji849].
    And merry Xmas too everyone.
