    But I can’t think what it’s called
My wife used to work in a florist - it's called oasis. The holes in oasis don't close back up, so you'd have to make a hole for each pen/pencil.

I never knew that organization technique was called 'theory of scattering'. Mind if I borrow that?

2mm glass beads, just under $1AUD per thousand including shipping. Mind you, it might be March before they arrive...

might be an expensive option - I estimate about 125,000 2mm beads to the litre

I wouldn't like to spill any glass beads in the workshop, trying to find them all or crushing some might not work out all that well. I did think of the shavings that come off my helical head thicknesser but I don't know if they would be dense enough.

I love the idea of rice. A blast of the heat gun, and you have a quick snack of puffed rice. Consider popcorn-making as well.

An alternate concept for those that also hate rummaging in a mug (which I have two of! However, they are filled with scissors, textas, and replacement leads) is to simply drill a block of wood to receive the pencil or pen of your choice. The added bonus is that you always know if you have not replaced it at the end of the day.

    Across my bench ...

    And close up ...

I love clutch pencils. They are always full length and easy to keep sharp ... http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolRev...blepencil.html
