I love recycled timber!!
Hi all.
I'm a big fan of redgum, one of the loveliest Aussie timbers and great to work with.
Went to the local salvage yard for a bit of a look around and the man there directed me to a pile of mangy looking redgum he just picked up, said it was from a demolished town hall near-by that was in a bad state after standing for 90 odd years. I grabbed some bits and took them home as I had a picture frame that needed making.
This first pic shows them as I picked them up.
Ran them through the thicknesser and was quite happy with how they came up. Nice deep reds and some figure (except for the plain looking one in the middle).
So I whipped up a picture frame with the shorter piece you can see in the above piccies. I also used some recycled ash as a feature and for a bit of contrast. I'm starting to lean away from the full gloss look, but in something like a picture frame that has a small surface area, I think it's ok.
Sometimes you just have to look for the beauty with-in after the crap is cleaned away.
Quite happy with how it came up. Now i just need something to use up the rest.
Steven.

Very nice work there Steven. I'm always on the lookout for old redgum fence posts, I find them a good source of boards for picture or mirror frames.
I'm not normally a gloss finish guy but totally agree that it suits the size and highlights the grain of your piece. Would you mind sharing the name of the finish product you used and how it was applied?

Thanks for the positive comments everyone.
Justin, I used Minwax Wipe-on Poly for the finish, one of my favorites. I use the satin finish applied with old t-shirt material. To get the high gloss result, I sand with 400 to 800 wet & dry between applications and usually run to 10 coats or more. The reason I apply so many coats is because I use automotive rubbing compound to smooth it out and get the shine, it's very easy to cut right back to timber if you're not careful. I've tried the gloss WOP but couldn't get as good a finish as I can with the satin, not sure why.
I'm looking forward to using the rest of this redgum. There's more left at the recyclers so might get enough to maybe make a hall table or something.
Thanks again.
Steven.

Nice work
I like recycled as well, but the thicknesser and buzzer blades certainly don't

Yes recycled timber is the way to go. I'm always on the lookout for large packing crates. Love the finished picture frame.

I also love recycled timber. But I also have a set of sacrificial blades for my thicknesser and hand planer.
- When I am using either as a scrub plane, then I use the sacrificial blades - they leave some ridges in memory of nail past, but who cares.
- Then I switch to my smoother blades.
Works well, for me.
I have little faith in metal detectors as too many nasties escape detection - rocks, shells, sand, rust, etc.
