Unhappy What Would You Do? LS Barker Bandsaw

Hi everyone more experienced than I (Yes, that's pretty much all of you!) I'm really enjoying messing about in my shed and am almost ready to try a couple of projects of my own, but I'm toying with selling the LS Barker, it's amazingly large (32") and I still use it each weekend with its funny DIY motor / feathered / clutch (It has a 3 Phase motor (I have that, too) but it's using a makeshift single phase as I don't have 3 Phase in my property... Anyway, long story short, what would you do?

What I plan on using the saw for - general more fiddly stuff than my (some to be gotten rid of DIY table saw) and drop saw.
Reasons to get rid of it are that it's a bit of a pig on the smaller motor, and it's massive... I'm about to halve the space of my workshop (wife + dust on everything = arghhhh)

Here are some Saw photos below (taken with a really wide lens I was using at the time, sorry)

    Thank you for your time!

I know what you wouldn't do....intricate scroll work.

Depends what sort of projects you are going to do or likely do in the future. If you are going to re saw larger timber than normal ie: break down smallish logs then hang onto it but if it is obviously over kill for what you have in mind then maybe sell it but I suspect that buyers for something like that are going to be few and far between.

I would find an alternative solution to whatever was threatening to halve my shed space.

You use this saw every weekend so if you sell it, you'd need to replace it.

How much would it cost to get 3 phase power instead?

An alternative to getting 3P power is to use the 3P motor and run it from single phase using a $140 VFD.

The Gotcha is the 3P motor has to be 240V 3P compatible but if its the original old motor it's doubtful. Some newer motors can run on both 415V 3P and be easily converted between the two. If you motor is not convertible you will be up for a replacement motor. However, if you have to replace the motor, that plus the VFD, and getting someone to install it for you you are well into the price of a budget Small BS with some dust collection capability, if that would satisfy you.

However if you want to be able to rip wide stock then a replacement motor and VFD will be much cheaper than a large BS.

Thanks all for your feedback, folks.

Reading it, and reading other posts on people's Barkers, restorations etc, I think I might hold onto her and restore her. Sure - takes up a stack of room, but it works brilliantly, I just need to work out the best way to restore it, slowly, and time will tell if i've made the right decision!

    Thanks again.

I might be biased with my penchant for old machines but in my opinion you’ve made the right choice! They just don’t make them like that any more and It will outlive all of us once restored.

I’ve had a fair bit of experience pulling old machines down now so if you want any advice or hit snags give me a shout.

I think you may have trouble selling it.
Any business would reject it as it would fail OH & S. Private individuals may not have the space or need for such a machine.

If it is being used, you have made the right choice to keep it.

Haha, so true! Most of the powered tools in my shed are either DIY or quite old, I approach them with the thought that "If I let my concentration slip, I'll lose fingers, and arm, or worse..." It comes from years of wandering around on the farm I grew up on, in the tool shed that had the BIG machines that could take your fingers, your arm or worse... (Thanks, Dad!) I mentioned my shed was getting smaller, one of the reasons is dust and the wife-factor, the other is that it separates the tools from where the kids put their bikes etc. I want them to learn, but I don't want them to go into the shed and turn the old jointer on (again!)

I think so, too. I've been watching Andy Rawls on Youtube, restoring his old Oliver 35 and it's made me quite keen to get started.

    Thanks again for your feedback.

How to stop the kids turning it on. Fit a lockable cover over the switch or fit a lockout on the C/B or remove the fuse. Another way, similar to what you may see in the cut shop at Bunnings is a lockable isolation switch.

I have a mains isolation for the whole shed, but the 8yo is getting taller and the 4yo is getting cheekier. I shall put the cake out of reach, so to speak.

One of these should slow them down.

    Default CB lockouts

    Or this type https://www.cirlock.com.au/products-...p-screw-detail
Does not need any wiring alterations or electrical qualifications to fit. You will require a screwdriver to fit and remove. A padlock can also be fitted to prevent unauthorized access to the screw for removal.
