Magetic knife holder
G'day Guys,
Has anyone out there made a magnetic knife holder similar to the mag-blok.
If so, what strength magnets did you use. My wife has instructed me to make her one and I'm looking at rare earth magnets ,like the Mag-blok, but as there are so many with differing strengths I'd like to know what other people have had success with.
She's got a number of different sized knives ranging in weight from 120g to 250g and I was thinking of getting something with about 450g pull to overcome a few mm thickness of timber plus a safety margin to hold the knives. I don't want to get something with too much pull so she has to lever the knife off the board either.
I'll contact a supplier next week with the same question but I just wanted pose it to some 'seasoned' woodworkers before then.
Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard,
BenchCrafted.com - Mag-Bloks for reference.
Haven't made one, but my effort would just be a routed channel inside to accept a rail. I dunno about holding strength, i think it has as much to do with the magnet as it does the material your hoping to hold with it, with that said i wouldn't want my missus chasing me with bent knives of any shape, i'd be as cautious as your being, good luck mate.
Neal.

I second Aussie Magnets. I bought a sample pack from them last week and had to fight with my brother to keep them as he had so much fun playing with them!

I bought some rare earth magnets with much the same intention - I got 6mm x 2.5mm N45 button shaped ones with an 800g strength. That isn't strong enough - although they can easily hold a knife up holding, say, the spine of the knife (i.e. the knife if hanging from the magnet so the load is 'tensile' for want of a better word), it is a different story when the magnet is holding th face of the knife as on a knife strip (i.e. the load is 'shear'). At that strength, the knife was just sliding off, and I reckon I'll need at least 3 magnets to make it work.
Get at least something with a 2kg pull, or use multiple smaller ones per knife.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice. I've since ordered a couple of sample packs of rare earth magnets to determine the most suitable strength for the knives. It seems as though it's a bit of 'trial and error' when selecting magnets but I'll make a few notes and take some photos to show what I've come up with for anyone interested.
Cheers,
Richard

I buy my magnets directly from China from this crowd... magnets - DealExtreme
They are very cheap especially because they charged zero shipping fees. No minimum quantity required - Sometimes my orders total no more than $1.50 ( on say, a lead for an iPod) and they still ship it free.
Recommended. Have used them a lot for a range of minor connectors such as TV and computer leads plus a whole lot of rare earth magnets.
