ply isn't cheap, mdf...no
what's wrong with pine ?If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

My personal preference would be for ply - its a good bit stronger, is MUCH more water/liquid resistant/proof, lighter & less toxic to the user - and that's just for starters .
From the size you mention (1/4") I'm also guessing you are going to use it for the bottom or possibly panels in a frame-and-panel construction - I don't think 1/4" (6mm) ply & specially not 6mm MDF, is strong enough on its own for a kids toy box - go the frame-and-panel path or use thick(-er) timber for the sides & top.

Thanks for the answers, This is the project http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=18383It calls for 1/4" ply and my initial reaction was to use MDF but after thinking about that I thought it is likely to be stood on by little feet and may not be strong enough. I know of a source ply/MDF offcuts and it will depend to some extent what is available at the time - or just take longer to collect what I need

If the edges are unsupported - like the roof over the bowsers for example I would use ply. The MDF will not be as strong and it will probably break. MDF would probably be OK for the walls.
I reckon ply would be the best choice for something you want to last.
I saw that plan yesterday and I'm going to make one for my boy."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."
