    Default Mahogany Semi spiral bannister

    Hello from Scotland folks.

I wonder if I could pick some of your brains?

I have a 160 year old mahogany semi spiral bannister on my stair case with 39 cast iron balusters. I want to take these out and have them dipped and stripped but I scared that if I take the bannister off it will spring and I will never get it back on. There is a metal strip screwed underneath it where the balusters are held in place.

Is it the case that it may spring or am I fretting over nothing? The chances of something that old springing?

    Cheers in advance folks.

Cast iron generally isn't very "springy," so probably not a major concern in that regard. But old buildings deform over time, and re-assembly with apparently identical parts might be a disappointment. A worthwhile precaution would be to make a plan for disassembly and reassembly, with marks assigned to each piece. For your process, I'd use thin metal tags with ID numbers stamped, and wired to each piece prior to disassembly, to be removed only after completion of the reconstruction. It would also be advisable to mark any other components that could possibly be re-installed wrong, e.g. upper and lower ends. Match-marks at joints can improve fitting parts together too.

These are standard practice in temporary shop assembly of heavy construction, such as bridge and building components before shipping.

    Cheers,
    Joe

The banister may well spring, but with a sensible approach to reassembly, it should go back together all right.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
