    Default small yet major problem

I have a problem trying to work out what kind of join has been used in a previous piece, the piece being a very simple and small Shoji Lamp.

When the 4 upright legs are intersected by the rails to support them, they intersect the legs and continue outside leaving a short 20mm stub. Now i can easily join the 2 rails that intersect with the leg with any numerous lapped joints, but how does the leg then continue through those 2 forming a 3 piece joint? This problem is very hard for me to put to paper without some kind of picture to show you. My email is [email protected] and id really appreciate some helpfull advice or tips on how to put a picture of the original lamp up here to view for everyone.

Thankyou for your time and patience

    Simon

I think you might be refering to one of those nutter Japanese joints, perhaps the hogyozukuri-nokigeta-shiguchi? (That sort of looks like an + on a stick, and I can't even comprehend how it goes together. )

You will get much better feedback if you post some pictures of the problem

In the 'Woodwork Pics' forum there is a guide to how to post pictures (as an announcement) at the top of the forum.

Default small yet major problem fix

Ok so i tried to edit my last post and ended up deleting the hole thing haha. Sorry and thankyou too everyone that replied already. If i have worked it out below should be a picture of the Lamp im trying to reproduce and u should be able to see the 3 point joints i need to work out how to reproduce.

As the hole piece is purely a challenge of my skills i do wish to keep the 3 intersecting pieces of timber in solid pieces, no glueing or doweling the stubs on as there is no challenge in that resolve.
As to the person who suggested some crazy Japanese joint I also think this must be the solution and have done alot of research as to wich one it was, with no such luck in finding it.

As before any and all advice or help is greatly appreciated, no matter how silly or complicated your solutions i always have something to learn from everyone

    Many thanks again

    Simon

    Default more info

K so what i left out above is what the problem is, where the rails intersect the legs is a 3 point joint, all pieces of timber are solid no gluing the stubs on to the outside the legs. I need to work out what kind of joint it is or any ideas or solutions as to how to join the 3 pieces together.

Ive probably forgotten something so if there is any more info or questions u need answered post them here nd i will be checking up most of the night as this joint is consuming every minute of my day!

    Thanks again

    G'day Simon,

That is a beautiful looking lamp.

No doubt a work of art.

Are they tricky joints at all? or merely butt joints with little bits stuck on the outside?

Those joints could be done with 1/2 lap type joints... but would be severely lacking in strength IMHO

Now that looks like a challenge.

Please take lots of photos showing the build, the good and the failures.

There is a puzzle that I saw at one of those magic/science type shops in Hobart that have a similar type of thing.

Will try and drop in and see if I can get one or at least the name.

    cheers

    Default 1/2 way there

So I spent yet another sleepless night working on this tiny problem.
I managed to track down the original source of the pic, found the artist (Nick Falzone) and he has a website of some amazing work (www.nickfalzonedesign.com) but no solution to wich joints or how he has assembled it.
I did find a small blurb about the piece on another website that says he
cut 112 joints by hand for this piece including

    mortise-and-tenons
    half-laps
    mitered-half-laps

The way he does his pieces is keeping with traditional Japanese methods so even though I can find no info about it I strongly doubt he would dowel or plug pieces on to the outside of legs.

Perhaps he has used the lap joints to join the inside rails to the legs, then mortise-and-tennon joined the stubs directly into the centers of the lapped joints???? Either way just alittle update on my thought progress so far, and yes when I do get around to starting it I will take lots of pictures to show how it goes

    Thanks again

    Simon
