Maker's Mark - Bassoon Style
G'day,
Faffing around in the shed today while waiting for some glue to set, I thought I'd see if I could make a presentable makers mark (MM).
I have an LV MM branding iron, but I've found it tricky to get the mark perfectly square on a board, and of course, one only gets one go.
So I chopped up a bit of Beech left over from the block mould I made when making the Spiers Replica, and found a section with some nice figure.
Hand planed a chamfer around the edges, and by using a clamped on sacrificial fence, branded the block. Applied a little Minwax wipe-on poly, just to highlight the figure and see what I'd get.
Dimensions are 100 x 40 x 10mm
I might just make a few of these (and some with Amboyna or NG Rosewood).

Hi Auld,
I like your Mark. Says it all and is nice and clear. But I do agree with Rocker that the Beech is pretty impressive
cheers

Nice piece overall, but I'm not sure I'd be using something like that... it'd give the wrong impression if(when) the maker's mark looked better quality than the rest of my piece!
Of course, this wouldn't be a problem for some people, no names mentioned. [mutter, mutter, grumble]

OK Folks,
The general opinion seems to be that the Beech is nice, but the mark is a bit naff. Hmmm. Suggestions then?
Should I lash out and get some MMs like DPBs, or maybe have someone carve some for me (I can't carve worth a darn)?

I reckon that if you really want a MM then get one like DPB's.
Of course, you could just get a rubber stamp made up and ink it on.
It really depends on how far you want to go with it.

IMHO To make that look better start with the wood just big enough for the text ot fit on and only say 2~3mm thick as its a bit to chunky.
Put a scored scorch mark around the outer edges to give it a border?
And yeah that is nice featured grain!....................................................................

It looks like I'm the odd man out. Again.
IMHO the brand looks good; nice, simple & straightforward, showing the pride of the maker in his work without needless self-promotion. I think Harry's right about sizing the blank to better fit the mark and like the idea of a border... maybe even just the plain ol' encircling oval? I'd also assumed the blank would be rebated into a surface, if not then thinner would look better.
To me, simple & understated is always a good indicator of quality... no "glitz" to hide mistakes.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Skew: Me too. Simple is good.
Thinner, oval shaped and smaller it is.
Hmm... Some bandsaw work is clearly coming up to cut nice tidy ovals. Of course, I could always, errr, ahem! "borrow" a Ford oval for a template? Eh Gra? In fact one of my neghbours drives a Fraud (oops!) Ford!
I'll figure out a way to get an even "scorch" mark, and see if I like that.
Ta mates!

Bit of pipe bend the end to shape, heat with flame?

Bit of pipe cut at an acute angle to get an oval?
Read about a suggestion to have a rubber stamp made up for a MM, stamp it on the timber with ink then going over the design with a woodburning tool. Bit more time consuming than a proper branded MM but maybe more accessible.
Cheers...............Sean
