Default Makita 2012 Fitting a new Poly V belt

Hi everyone - Have bought a Makita 2012 thicknesser. Seems to be in good shape, and I got it for a reasonable price. I need to replace the disposable blades and the poly v belt . (Price for parts will be about $110.) Process for fitting the blades is clear, but there's nothing in the manual about replacing the belt. Checking other machine manuals on line it appears that removal involves simply sliding the belt towards yourself while rotating it...by hand!! Installation is the reverse.
Am I on the right track?
    Thanks
    Loun

Mate, I've had to replace the drive belt on thicknessers and its a bloody hard job, all I can say is don't put the belt in hot water - it doesnt work.

You could use a screw driver to help get in onto the wheels,??

Rather than use screwdrivers to lever your new poly V belt on to your easily damaged multi grooved pulley wheel, fit the belt to the top (small) pulley wheel, then fit to the lower as far as possible. Beyond this point, turning the lower pulley wheel causes the half fitted belt to slip, and mild cursing, right?

Has your lower pulley wheel got a raised rim, formed by the shaft nut recess? I bet it has.

Now - and this is the clever bit - clamp your belt to this rim using very small mole grips at the point where it is coming off the pulley wheel and carry on turning the pulley wheel.

I fitted a belt that looked to be 1/2 inch too small this way.

    Richard.
