    Default Makita 2012NB Thicknesser blades

Like to get some feedback from someone that is using a Makita 2012NB thicknesser. I have had mine for about twelve months. Being more a framer than a fine woodworker its gets used occasionally. I have started using it more often lately and the blades appeared to get dull. As the blades are reversible I changed them around and yep sure enough no pulling through the other side of the machine required. After about two hours however the blades appeared to dull again. I was machining rough sawn Vic ash but was surprised that the blades went dull so quick. At $110 for a new set of blades, buying rough sawn timber is proving to be an expensive exercise!

Yes the blades are not cheep, the last sets I bought from Power Tool Specialists cost $62.00 a set.

    Brand: Makita
Product Name: 2012NB HSS BLADES (793346-8)
    Product Code: 00001658
    Category: Thicknesser (Electric Tools)
    Quantity: 2
    Price (each): $62.00
305mm double edge planer blades for 2012NB HSS 2 PACK

The timber I've been using them on, Tasmanian Oak and Silver Ash don't seem to be to hard on the blades.

Edit They were purchased late 2011, Still using them.
But I do re-sharpen the edges if they get a little dull using "Scary Sharp"
3M Abrasive sheets when the planer has any problems getting a nice clean cut.

    Regards Steve.

    Thanks Steve,
I get most of my consumables from Lorry @ The tool centre McKinnon. Your right they are a lot cheaper at the Power Tool Specialist in Carlton. I will have to give him a hard time when I'm in there next. The instructions that come with the thicknesser make mention of blades(can be resharpened). Have you looked at this option?

I found another thread with a similar issue. I don't know how to link to this thread( maybe somebody can do it for me or tell me how). If you search in the woodwork forums for" Makita Thicknesser - blades", it should come up.

    Hi,

I haven't ever done a proper resharpening of the blades, I only give them a slight touch up with the "Scary Sharp" 3M self adhesive lapping film that I got from the Sandpaper Man
I only restore a clean edge in the blades when they get a little dull. The lapping film doesn't take off very much metal, its more like using a strop on a razor.
I only do 2 or 3 passes over the lapping film starting with the 40 micron, 15, and finally 5 micron.
I do this 5 or 6 times then turn the blades around and use the other side of the blades. I don't take off much metal as I don't want to affect the alignment of the blades or unbalance them.

    Regards Steve.

Ok, here is a couple of links

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f13/ma...-blades-69231/

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f44/makita-thicknesser-knife-sharpener-69605/

I made one jig but have since updated it. The angle on the knives is not 45 degrees but from memory it is 47 (don't ask).

This thread has reminded me that I was to make a better jig but just haven't got around to it...(it's on a long list).

When you say rough sawn Vic Ash, is this new timber or old recycled timber?

If old recycled timber, the surfaces will most likely be full of silica, dust etc which is hard on blades.
    Cheers
