Default Makita DXT ls1016 cannot lock

Hey guys, wanting some advice is someone can help. Just picked up a second hand Mitre saw, everything works great on it but he said when i inspected it the lever on the right hand side of the angle setter doesnt work. So the lock is suppose to stop the staunchions from sliding back becoming a sliding compound saw, its mean to stop it so its just a drop saw.

Now looking into this pretty deep i have taken the saw apart (well the base anyway) to find that the lever is intact and appears to be functioning correctly ie its not broken or twisted in some form. The only thing i can come up with is that its missing something for the lever to engage correctly.

    http://www.ereplacementparts.com/mak...99_119097.html

That link is the exploded parts diagram and i am referring to parts 215,214,210 and 235. on page B

235 is a little wheel with tracks on it tracking along part 210. Now it makes sense if that were to rotate something into position to rub agains tthe staunchion then lock it in place but theres nothing that moves aside from the wheel. it seems that something is missing

This video shows the motion i am talking about

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0qF...k9lfjJYA1Zjq3w

So the video shows part 207 flipped upside down. its suppose to move something but i dont know what, has anyone had the lever not engaging the staunchions before and got it fixed? It seems trivial im just wondering what part is missing or broken so i can order it.

    Cheers,
    Nathan

Okay so i have fixed it. I thought id put it in here in case anyone else came across a similar or same problem. Problem is when you pull the lever on the right hand side of angle setting handle its loose and doesnt engage the staunchions an stop them sliding bringing the blade into a static position.

What it is is the wheel that has teeth in it actually has a thread on it under closer inspecton. because you just pull and push the lever it doesnt actually look lik its doing much but you need to take the rod off, and sping the wheel until the thread engages with the staunchions and stops it from sliding, reinstall the bar and screw it down then you will feel a bit of weight with the lever and it works!

sorry if this doesnt make sense, im trying to explain it as clearly as i can.

Anyway the guy i bought it off complained he never had it working shortly after he bought it and never bothered to fix it. now a cheap saw just became at least a fully functioning saw that would cost a lot more brand new

    Cheers,
    Nathan

hey Nathan, sorry for reviving an old thread. Just bought a 2nd hand ls1016 and have the above issue. I can see the cog with teeth that spins as per your video. No idea how it actually engages to lock the rails though. Is it as simple as releasing the screw circled in red to disengage the cog and spinning the wheel until some thread engages?

Judging by Nathan's description of his fix you do need to disengage the rack from the nylon gear and rotate the gear in a clockwise direction as viewed from the plain end you can see in your photo. That brass rod has a thread on the other end and as the gear is rotated it screws the brass rod in to lock on the slide rail. If you loosen the screw you have circled and you may also need to loosen the other screw to the right (it appears to have a red top in the photo) just to give enough movement to disengage the rack from the pinion gear. Move the locking bar to the locked position and then rotate the pinion gear clockwise until you feel the end of the brass rod come up firmly against the sliding rail. Slide the locking bar about one tooth towards the release position and then engage the rack with the pinion gear again and then retighten your screws. It might be a bit of trial and error as to how many teeth you need to move the locking rack to make it lock correctly.
I don't have this model but its my understanding from the video and parts list that this would be how it is done.

100% this... I was having a play last night and was able to fix without removing the base. I was able to loosen that screw and push the spring holding the rack against the pinion to one side. That gave enough play to lift the rack off the pinion (without any other screws), and spin the cog slightly clockwise. Was only a minimal change and I couldn't spin anymore when it went into place (ensuring the rails were fully in at the time). Simply put the rack back into place, spring into place and tightened screws.

    Thanks to you both
