    On rough or wet timber I use a Sawyers Wax crayon
    On machined timber I use all the following depending on use and visibility.
    .5mm pencil, fine ball point, marking knife and sometimes I will sharpen the .5mm pencil and run it lightly along the knife mark which leaves you with a fine line that can be both seen and felt.

    On dark timbers i use masking tape, then it's easy to see your
    pencil mark.
