MDF Sealer?
I wanted to know a cheapish sealer for MDF as I build a lot with this product and have been asked to estapol two side tables for a friend but I find the estapol sucks straight in, any suggestions?

Living in the wet tropics I find that MDF is good for: templates; jigs; absorbing all the available atmospheric moisture so it can swell like a sponge. Thin your estapol with turps 50/50, then apply another coat 70/30 and then topcoat it a couple more times. I know it's going to use a fair bit of estapol this way but you'll have less of a chance that it will absorb moisture and swell. If you somehow manage to coat it with a product that just sits on top then any damage to the coating will let in moisture. Humidity may not be quite as high in Brisbane but it will work its way in. Nitrocellulose lacquer is slightly cheaper but will need to be sprayed on.

Mirotone has a product for such a purpose. I forget its product code.. I think it might have been 803. Can't remember, its been a while since I used it... But it works fine. Drys damn quick too so its not like your waiting for it to dry and makes sanding the stuff easy if your painting it. I put it on before I used to undercoat it with 2-part Poly-U and it saved me heaps of time and product.
Last I heard (which was a few years back) wattyl was developing a product to compete with mirotone....Go to a professional finishing supply business. Usually automotive finishing supply companies also supply commercial wood finishing products.

I used the Wattyl lacquer a few years back and it wasn't as nice to use as the mirotone and from memory was only marginally cheaper. No one in Cairns stocks it now and I wonder whether it's still on the market. There's another nitrocellulose lacquer on the market by Croda, I used it once and it was fine but I forgot where I got it from so I just stick to the Mirotone. BTW Shane Mirotone changed all the number codes to 4 digits a little while ago just to confuse everyone. Luckily the supplier knows what I want when I go in as I can't for the life of me remember numbers.

yeah I know Mirotone changed there product codes. It seems whenever everyyone was getting used to the codes they changed them. But they havn't changed them now for a while so wouldn't surprise if they do soon.
The product I am talking about (might have actually been 802) might have been lacquer based but it wasn't a finish it was only a sealer design primarily for MDF but could be used on other surfaces. I never used wattyl's cause personally i never thought wattyl's products were as good as mirotones, so I can't comment on that one.

Estipol sanding sealer is the go.
works under polyeurathane paving paint too.
you must sand it.

try wattyl sanding sealer, it will make things much easier for you and provide a great base for a quality finish.
