MDF Sealing, Priming and Painting - Advise Please
I have made a temporary external gate from MDF (as it was cheapest option for me) until the main gate has been repaired. I am not seeking a perfect finish only a waterproof protection finish from the external weather elements.
I have been reading up on MDF Sealing, Priming and Finishing information on the internet, but now I am more confused with the mixed information available on the subject.
Can anyone kindly help me out by clarify a few questions below about MDF for me please?
Sealing MDF:
Taking into account my most economical option (I have PVA Glue).
Question 1
Can I use a PVA glue diluted with water say one part glue to 5 parts water solution to seal MDF?
When Using MDF ....What do I need to seal
Question 2
a. MDF Edges only
b.MDF Edges and Surfaces?
Painting After Sealing
Question 3
I plan to use oil based undercoat (two coats).... followed by black gloss paint (one coat)....applied to edges and surfaces......to protect from rain fall etc .....will this painting arrangement work okay with MDF and will it provide adequate protection from the external weather elements... for about 2 to 3 months temporarily, until the main gate has been repaired?
Question 4
Any other advice you might consider adding would be appreciated.

MDF Sealing, Priming and Glossing
Hello
Thanks for the reply JillB and Max250
I suppose from your explanations the water based primer....doubles as a sealer and primer them.... no need for a separate sealer?
Thanks Again

A couple coats of thick pink primer and then a oil based outdoor/marine finish will do what you need, dont expect it to last too long in full weather maybe 1~2yr . Do a few extra coats of primer on the edges first.
Everyday hardware shop pva is definitely not good enough, its really only a temporary fix used in this way.....................................................................

PVA on MDF edges is to seal the edges so they can be sanded and painted to get a uniform smooth finish. Otherwise the edges soak up too much paint and it is difficult to get a uniform finish. It has little if anything to do with protection and weatherproofing which is best addressed using the Wattyl advice.
