    Default Mechanism for Fold-Up Desk

    I'm trying to find a hinge and locking mechanism that will let a cupboard door swing up and lock at 90° so it can be used as a small desk for a built-in shelving unit I'm designing. I've looked around the Hafele website and done lots of internet searching but haven't found what I'm after.

    The key requirements are;
    1. Sits close to front edge of shelves when desk is in vertical position (lots of the hinge mechanisms have quite a large offset out the front)
    2. Swings upwards 90° and locks in place so it can be used as a desk

    I'm sure there is a mechanism out there that does this - I just can't find it! Any ideas?

    I will say at the outset that I don't know the answer on this for certain, but I would doubt any hinge would be available to achieve what you're looking for. Bear in mind, any hinge designer must cater to a degree for "worst possible scenario", so stop and consider what happens when a toddler or young child uses this to support themselves or pull themselves up from the floor/sitting position - the stresses involved on the hinge and surrounding material would be quite high, and in such a case, failure might leave any manufacturer open to liability.

    I can see a couple of ways of achieving close to your goal:

    (1) Support the protruding section with a telescopic support undearneath the protruding section that is well mounted under the fixed section, or
    (2) Use something like the Blum undermount drawer system to achieve a pull-out section, though this will mean the fixed section will be lower than the pull out section, or
    (3) Have a hinged "leg" or "legs" that can fold out from underneath the protruding section to support themselves from the floor level, or
    (4) Legs as noted above that support themselves in a triangular alignment from some part of the inbuilt cabinet carsasse.
