Melbourne, Where do you buy your timber?
Hey guys,
Keen to start woodworking and im finding it hard to locate a place that sells s4s timber. Where do you all get your timber from? And if anyone knows a place in the west that would be great, although i cant seem to find any.
Cheers

Some native timbers can be found S4S (Pine, Vic Ash, Jarrah) and construction timbers like Merbau and WRC can also be had, but imported timber is usually rough sawn or skip dressed (planed both faces, but may still have rough areas) at best. Some suppliers will dress timber for an extra fee.
What species are you looking for?
I'm happy to dress it for you at work if you need.

Hey mate, i was thinking something like american oak, i love the look of jarrah but the girlfriend likes lighter looking wood. Doesnt have to be american oak though. I'm new so i would like to look at a few variety in person to get a feel as to what each species really looks like.

Matthews is good too. I've heard that they're going to be filling AFT's place with more specialised/exotic timbers.

Yep, Britton timber and Matthews Timber are both great.
You can usually find dressed-all-round pine and vic ash at most lumber yards who sell for builders.___________________________________________________________

Timber.
Hi all,
" Market Timbers " were out West, on the Cnr. of Market Street, & Somerville Road, in the Footscray Area.
Haven't been there for along time, so I hope they are still there.
Down here in Geelong, Vic. we have " Timber Zoo " on the Portarlington Road, & they specialise in Recycled Timber.
They have to do a lot of work on the wood, so prices appear to be up a bit, but it is all good stuff.Regards,
issatree.

I got my hardwood floors from Urban Salvage at Spotswood. www.urbansalvage.com.au
The guy I spoke to really seem to know what he's talking about. I think they only source native Aussie wood, so you probably won't find American Oak, but I'm sure they can help you. They sell mostly recyled/reclaimed timber, but they also stock new timber as well.
I was very pleased with the Blackbutt that I got from them.
