Merbau for Indoor Table
I have access to some lengths of merbau that is pretty old. It is from a demolition site. They are about 3.6m X 40mm x 150mm and rough sawn. I want to make a table to seat my largish tribe and a few of their friends.
I would like some help please.
1. I am guesiing that merbau would make a pretty decent Looking table - am I correct?
2. I would love a plan of a table that would seat 10.
3. What is the best way to finish it
I have access to some reasonable wooodworking equipment.
Thank
Kym

Kym,
1) should look really nice, merbau (Kwila) has a deep gold to red colour and is often used for outdoor furniture.
2)Depends on your decor/style and of you have chairs you want to tie in with, but at a bare minimum you need to allow 600 of table per person, so if you seat one at either end the table would need to be at least 2400 x 600 or 1800 x 1200 if it's two at each end. Neither of these would look good, dimensions wise and 600 is a little squeezy if it's all or mostly adults at the table. Probably more like 3600 x 1200 or 2100 x 1500, height is usually around 750 or so (from memory)

I got a bunch of old Merbau with the intention of using it for cabinets etc.
Not sure if it is in all Merbau, but when I machined it up, every piece had lots of small areas of the pores filled with yellow sulphur. AFAIK Nothing removes it unless you dissolve it with expensive dangerous chemicals. Good timber otherwise if you don't mind the bright yellow streaks.I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

kwila table photos
Kym,
Heres some pics of my Kwila Island kitchen bench. It came up ok under Mirotone 2 pack.It had to filled with the appropriate sanding sealer.
Kwila will show yellow sulphur streaks. It comes from volcanic areas.
My neighbor ,a spray painter sprayed it. Do not try it without the correct gear it's toxic.
