Merbu Decking
G'day everyone,
Hope someone can help, we have just done an extension on our home and by doing this have extended the excisting verandah, my problem is that I had to use new Merbu decking which looks awful alongside the old grey existing Merbu.
My question is, am I able to get the old decking sanded/treated somehow to look new again or even close to new.
Hope this isn't to stupid a question.
Thanks in advance
Mark

Hi Mark
I suggest you get some deck cleaning stuff. Most of the paint companies make one. I've got a cabot's deck clean, although I reckon the wattyl stuff was better. Buy a stiff bristled broom and dilute the cleaning stuff a bit less than they recommend on the packet (maybe 3 water to 1 of the deck clean stuff). Then get scrubbing.
You can also use a high-pressure water hose to blast a lot of it off. You'd be surprised how well things come up.
If this doesn't work out, you could always hire a floor sander and run along the length of the boards - but you'll have to punch all the decking nails below the surface.
Hope this helps.

Mark, the deck cleaning stuff Trav is talking about is comprised of oxalic acid. This will do what you need, along with a stiff bristled brush and a bit of elbow grease. Make sure you rinse it off thoroughly afterwards. This, plus possibly with a very light sanding, will do the job. Aside from the ones put out by Wattyl and the other paint mfrs, from memory you can get unbranded oxalic acid in most paint depts.
Recommend going forward applying decking oil to the whole area every 6-12 months, it really isn't that hard and keeps it looking mickey mouse. We have friends who put their deck down about 6 years ago, oil it regularly, and it looks like it only went down last week.
Good luck.............Sean
