Metabo 330 thicknesser/planer
Has anyone had one of these? We're trying to decide on a suitable thicknesser for small scale woodworking projects. Greatest concern is ability to handle Aussie woods like Vic Ash and Redgum.
Metabo has a good reputation for power tools, so we considered it above some of the small, super el cheapos.
Cheers

330 has been in use at secondary college near me for 5-6 years gets serviced once a year and has been great little workhorse according to the guy who services the little beast however for similar money the triton thicknesser is worth a look question do you have a jointer as that is the way to go if you are looking to dress from rough run through one flat then one edge which gives you two surfaces at 90 degrees then through thicknesser to get desired thickness sorry if im teaching granma to suck eggs

Hi Fubar
Thanks for the info.
We actually hadn't considered a jointer, because we are only looking at dressing rough and reducing the size to make small occasional pieces. The thicknessing is the main job, because HWMBO scroll saws, and often timber isn't available in thin enough pieces, so it would be handy to bring it down a little in the shed.

I bought one second hand a few months ago and it is a very good machine. Planes hardwood well. Mine has a minor problem with snipe that I haven't yet been able to rectify.
If you are buying new however I'd be very tempted to buy a 15" from Carbatec or one of those places instead. They would be around the same price and a much sturdier machine.
Regards, Kev

Thanks Kev
We're very new to the woodie's game, and haven't got much experience with Carabatec or Triton electric tools. I've tended to buy the best we can afford, and have stuck with well known brands at a midrange level. (DeWalt/Makita/Metabo/Bosch Blue)
I have tended to be a little suspicious of things built offshore, as far as durabiity and quality goes, as well as replacement and repair issues. So I've tended to play it pretty safe. As far as I know Metabo is still built in Europe.
Being located in the bush, also means we can't just pop down the street to have something faulty fixed. I'll go back to the Carbatec catalogue and have a look at theirs, as well as look on the'net' to find out more about the Triton product.
Cheers
Lili
