Default where to get mineral oil

Can anyone tell me where i can get hold of mineral oil in brisbane?

I bought a bottle once from Ikea believe it or not and have used it for ages to oil my cutting boards as it has no colour or smell so works really well. they don't seem to have it anymore and now my bottle has finally run out.

    Cheers

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand mineral oil is the name for a group of products rather than a specific product. For example, to distiguish its properties from organic oils extracted from plants and such. There are any number of oils that fall into the mineral oil category.

From memory Parafin Oil would fall into this category, this can be purchased from Bunnies under the Digger's brand.

    doh!

I should have realised that thanks guys. In fact, this stuff could easily have been baby oil with no scent. just a lot cheaper i think .

The price is always inversly proportional to the age of the little person its meant for.

Actually, I think there was a poison hazard label on the Digger's Parafin Oil, perhaps not a good idea for cutting boards! I'll check it when I get home.

I reckon the stuff from the Chemist is probably to go if you are going to use it on a surface which is in contact with food.

Got mine at the grocery store, above the band aids and next to the tea tree oil and other natural products.

It's sold as a laxative - a spoonful and day keeps everything lubricated

The local pharmacy would be your best bet but make sure it is labelled Light Liquid Paraffin BP, USP or EP meaning it conforms to specs. laid down by the British, US or European Pharmacopeias. That means its medical grade & definitely non-toxic. It is absolutely perfect for oiling chopping boards because it won't oxidise like many or most "natural" oils. Regular paraffin oil is also known as lamp oil & may well be a bit toxic if not poisonous. Take it from an old chemist.

There should be an ingredient list on the label Les. What does it say?

Here we can get it at the drug store (Chemist) or grocery store.

And Tex, how can you get a spoonful down?

I've never actually tried it, but surely it can't be worse than castor oil.

I looked at the label on the Digger's yesterday, there's no poisons label and it states that there is usually no need to seek medical treatment if ingested, but it also says is not intended for oral use.
