    Default Mineral oil

I'm looking to buy a couple of litres of mineral or paraffin oil (food grade). Does anyone know any suppliers that sell it in Sydney? I'm happy to buy interstate if need be.

The chemist and supermarkets sell it in 200ml bottles for about $5. That's $25 a litre. Anyone seen it cheaper? IKEA sell it in 500ml bottles for around $20. Bunnings sells it but it's not food safe.

    Cheers

I bought a 5 litre container from a vetinary supply place online. Can't remember exactly where but here's one from a quick google search

PARAFFIN OIL 5L - Equine Solutions

They use it for horses or something.

I get mine from IKEA in Perth at $7.99 for 500ml. Probably not the cheapest but it's handy.

Thanks. Is it safe for human consumption?

To be honest I wouldn't know, but I think it would be alright. Some of the guys on here may have a better idea than me.

Andy, Pat had at least two litres for sale at the BM FGT. He left it behind, and I sent it back with fletty (it may still be at his place if you get my drift - Sturt).

I don't know if it was food-safe, but suggest you send Pat a PM.

Definitely ok - it may not be "food grade" but it's definitely good enough to drench horses/cattle etc with, which means it's got to be really, really close, just sold in a store with more dust on the shelves.
If it can be sold for their consumption (via a stomach tube), then we certainly could eat it, too! (Same argument applies to molasses, if those of you out there are struggling to find some in the usual shops.)

Try a vet clinic that does large animal / equine work, or a produce store that carries farm animal food-stuffs (i.e. horse feeds, hay, etc). Either of these could order in 20L drums (or more!) of the stuff if you really needed it in quantiy.

But extra virgin olive oil might be an option, too: I start with paraffin, but maintain our two boards with EVOOil. I've used it for 8+ years without problems. ('Cos we all have some cooking oil in our homes, within a step or two of the cutting boards.)

    Cheers, Matt
(Day job = mixed practice vet).

(... ... I wonder if you could also use "Catlax" (paraffin oil emulsion in a caramel flavoured paste)...)

They say it goes rancid....but two years ago I cracked open a 4 litre tin that I bought in 2008....and it's still fine (after being opened for 2 years). It may be slightly stale, but it's definitely not rancid.

Andy, look at New Directions, Marrickville.

My bottle is still at Fletty's. I'll get there, one day

    Thanks Gents.

I'm doing a big batch of cutting boards as a side project at the moment so I needed a cost effective supplier of mineral oil. I've also been making my own mineral oil/beeswax paste to use as a final finish.

And just for future reference- IKEA does sell it for for $8 for 500ml.

U-beaut also sells it, but in small bottles. Maybe he can do bulk?

    100% on Stella.

Its food grade industrial volumes at excellent prices. A 20L cask is all you need for soaking the chop boards in overnight. Store it in a huge plastic food crate from a kitchen supply company.... they come with a yellow lockable lid that completely seals over the outside edge. They are quite cheap.

Here are some boards of Ilyas that I soaked for him.

I'm making about 30 boards so I do plan on submerging them in mineral oil. I thought I'd let them soak for 30 minutes or so but you reckon overnight? Obviously you've had no problems soaking them for so long?
