    Default mirror frame

    Hi all,

After not being able to find the mirror that i wanted, I've decided to build my own. Its a simple rectangular design with mitered corners. it will be made from 90x19mm tas oak. then finish with Feast Watson black proof tint and a few coats of gloss varnish. Now for the questions.

I guess the best way to join the corners is a biscuit joint but whats the next, as i don't have a biscuit joiner. i was thinking dowels??

I was going to rebate 4mm deep and 15mm wide on the back to fit the 4mm mirror. then tack on a piece of 3mm mdf to cover the mirror back and hold it in place. is this sound like the best way to do it.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi steverc!

I think it's good idea to make rebate a little wider than mirror's length and width. It allows wood frame to shrink and expand depending on a humidity without stressing the glass. To center mirror in a wider rebate you can use some compressible spacers, e.g. http://www.woodcraft.com/product.asp...&FamilyID=3883 or make it yourself.

The miters weren't as tight as i would have like.(but ill blame my tools for that)
I also would have liked a thinner gloss finish just the grain stood out a bit more.
but im happy with it over all.
