Default making a mirror at school WIP

    hi all.

term two means Woodturning gifted and talented students program begins and runs in sport time. this year, it has been extended to involve general woodwork as well as lathe work.

in previous years, we diveded into groups and made different things each week. this year we are just making a mirror each (chavvel?- i think they're called).

this is supposed to run all the way untill the end of the term.

each week, i'll post what we've done and i'll try to get pics but i dont think we're allowed to have cameras at school.

and at the end, i'll post a pic of the finished piece.

Also, i'll try to get meansy_wood to contribute to this thread as he is in the same gats program at school.

    Default week 1

week 1, for all the newbies to turning, we had a "this is a roughing gouge" talk and all that kind of stuff. then we saw the plans ( very quickly ) before getting the timber and running it thru the thicknesser.

also those that were'nt helping with the thicknesser were practising beads and hollows cos practice makes perfect.

towards the end, some people started to bandsaw out they're legs ( of the mirror).

next week i get to start turning the poles ( i think )

    untill next week.........

aah it might be similar to the mirror I made back in high school, the first and only thing I have done a lathe.

Look forward to seeing how yours goes.

Ask your teacher and explain why you want to photograph. You might be surprised at the response even if he takes the photos

    Default week 2

    week 2....

we started off with a practice piece on the lathe.

we then moved on to cutting out the legs on the bandsaw............i stuffed up one leg, but i got a second chance ........i found it more difficult to cut 2 inch timber ( thick ) than what i'm used to, i take it the thickness does matter when cutting timber?
the rest of the time was spent sanding....

i got some pics of the legs planned out but i forgot to take fotos after they were cut . also got a pic of what the teacher made 7 years ago, that is the base design of what were making cept his is a oval mirro, we're making a square mirror.

btw....will post the pics tommorow when i'm on the other computer..

    stirlo,

remember the high school motto's :

if your "gifted" you may get "bashed" unless you keep a low profile

dont let anyone know you've got a camera unless you want it stolen by the "non-gifted"

sport is good for you, it:
    1) stops you getting fat
    2) attracts the chickies as they drool over your sweating pubescent teenage body
    3) you can make friends with the "non-gifted" so long as you dont outshine them at thier chosen sport

Now I know you hav'nt had any homework from us since Alexs set you some not so long ago , but since alexs is away I will set you some now :

Take photo's of your work and one or 2 of your class mates - post them here and clearly identify which is yours. you will receive style points and greenies from the forum members - I hope yours is better than your mates. (it better be!!!) along with copious critisizms and praise.

and whatever you do - dont smoke it makes your hair fall out.

zed...good advice.......'cept the bit bout skipping sport, i'm doing the course for two reasons, 1 i get enough bloody sport ( 3-4 games hockey a week and then club training twice a week and rep commitments). 2. i get to do more ww.

anyway, i'll get some piccies of other peoples work ( if they let me) so you guys can compare.

    We want piccies, stirlo!!!!!!
SWMBO made me throw out my cheval mirror (said it was too big for the room). Now she says that she wants a sort of standing, swivelling mirror thing in the same room so she can get dressed properly. So far I haven't said a word, but when your pictures come up, I will ask if that is what she had in mind (and bite my tongue when I want to say, "just like the one you made me throw out)!!!
    Cheers
