Default Mitre box for wide boards

I'm looking for a miter box that can handle wide boards - 7 to 10". I need to make a bunch of 45 degree cuts with a handsaw and I'm not having much luck doing it other ways. I've looked on ebay and there are lots of miter boxes there but I can't tell how wide a board they can handle. Is there any particular brand or terminology I should look for?

10"? That's a bit on the huge side for a mitre box! The biggest old one I can think of is a Miller's Falls 74 but I don't know its capacity. Plus they are now collecters items so you will have to pay many dollars for one.

For me the best way would be running a circular saw along a batten but you state it must be with a handsaw so can you saw along a pencil line and then finish off with a hand plane on a shooting board?

Don't know if you can still buy the guides, but if you can you could build your own - like this one (even though Dad bought it as a kit)

I don't think you'll find a standard miter box that big, but these:

Stanley Deluxe Miter Box with Saw-20-600D - The Home Depot

have a step at the front plate to rest against a bench. You could cut the base lengthwise near the back plate and offset the front and back plates to provide for wider boards, attaching the whole affair to a base plank, with the 45-degree slots aligned. The 45-degree cuts would have to be all in the same direction, of course. If you provide about 11-12" separation, the lock pins should work for your intended range.

    Cheers,
    Joe

What about a batten along the angle and saw against the batten

    build your own ??
it's really quite simple -- a piece of 3/4 ply for the base with a front and back fence attached by screws

or just do them by hand
knife the 45 degree line -- chisel a V on the waste side -- cut with saw
    regards from Alberta, Canada
