Default mitre saw dust collecting rig

I have bounced around a bit trying to come up with something to catch SOME of the dust from my mitre saw.
Being the lazy sort I did not want to spend a week building some Rube Goldgerg contraption that overpowered the saw and cost a small fortune.
While I am convinced anything short of a jet turbime engine will never collect enough of the blast of this type of saw I had a go at the design below.
Cheap and dirty total cost about $20 bucks US or 16 Quint .

I like the use of what looks like a plastic tub or tank of some kind. The limitation of that design is the use of 4" Flex which does not collect enough air to capture anywhere close to the amount of fine (invisible) dust thrown around by a mitre saw. 4" ducting can only move ~1/3rd of what 6" ducting can collect. Of course suiitabky sized DC will also be needed to fully utilise 6" Ducting although a significant improvement can be made to a 2HP DC to make better use of 6" ducting.

    Looks like some good work

I've been researching this and digging into the issue too - it's one of two tools that are tricky to set up good extraction for (the other is a lathe).

I wonder if this might also give you some ideas: Creating an Ultimate Miter Saw Fence! Did I just crack the dust extraction code for a Miter Saw? - YouTube

I agree that the wood lathe is even a bigger challenge when it comes to dust collection.
In my opinion and experience absolutely nothing that will work to collect the cuttings from turning. Too many directions escaping from the cut, too much energy flying off the tool cutting edge and so on. The only lathe operation I have that helps a little is shown in the pictire here. It is a simple proto type bowl SANDING DUST collector that i whipped up from and ordinary cradboard box. As you can see it kind of fits around the bowl / lathe chuck. There is a 4 inch hose connected in the box (back panel in the installed orientation) connected to my dust collector. If I am sanding the bowl at the 12:00 o-clock position I have the lathe spinning in reverse CW. If I am holding the sand paper at 6:00 I have the lathe spinning in the usual forward direction CCW. Mounting is two "sticks" hot melt glued to the box bottom as installed and clamped to lathe ways . It really works very well the sanding dust flys into the box even when sanding inside the bowl. I did not even try to go beyond this proto type rig it aint broke (yet) and at this point of my life I have to KISS my work (Keep It Simple Stupid) .
    Please ask any questions.

I like your simplicity train of thought. What you have is better than nothing, and collects the bulk of the mess.
By the way, I "too" am a new member, and can't seem to find the section to post in. "New Member". Could you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
