    Default Mitre Gauge

I've had a gut full of trying to deal with a poor quality mitre gauge and am thinking about buying a INCRA mitre gauge (not sure about the model yet). The only reason I have been swayed towards INCRA is that there doesn't seem to be any competition for them in the top end. Is this really the case? Is the INCRA worth the cash?

    Hi Snow

I bought an INCRA 3000 and was somewhat disappointed with their quality control. My main issue was the fence was not vertical to the table and I had to shim with brass to correct as this is not adjustable. I find the angle adjustment easy to use (indexed every 0.5 deg) but the fence need to be adjusted to clear the saw any time you need to change the angle and the stop is fiddly to set. Not sure if I would purchase it again.

Only time I use it now is when I need to cut at odd angles as I get much better results using a crosscut sled and a mitre sled. Both these were simple to construct and incredible accurate and cheap.

I have the 1000 which is more than sophisticated enough for my needs. I also had the problem as JollyGoodTime with the face of the fence not being perfectly perpindicular to the table.

I later bought a SCMS (Makita LS1013) and I think that I have only used the Mitre Guage once since that time.

I have just recently purchased the Incra 3000, and yes, i found the same thing with the fence not being at right angles to the saw table, but, if u read the instructions ( like i know everyone does ) you will see that they say that you may have to shim the fence bracket where it meets the body of the protractor, to adjust this, they suggest pieces of paper, and i found that mine came with some already fitted at that point. I asume this is to make up for any slight variations that there will surely be from saw to saw, ie- mitre slot to mitre slot! Surly this is just another thing that has to be TUNED to suit your particular saw. I must say i am happy with mine! especially for the money, got it almost $200 off from Carbatec in Bris a few months ago, when they had them on special.

The new Kreg miter gauge has received mostly excellent reviews from many sources. Not sure if anyone in Oz is stocking them right now but Gregory Machinery in Brisbane sell Kreg gear - www.gregmach.com. You could try them.

Otherwise www.kregtool.com (in the USA) if interested.

    Dean,

I own a Kreg mitre gauge, which I imported from the US, and am very happy with it. According to the Kregtool website, Carbatec in Brisbane is their Australian reseller, but I don't know whether they stock the mitre gauge as yet.

I havn't used a factory miter gauge for years.
I have two sleds, one fixed square & one with a biiiggg protractor on it.
Square Is square & the accuracy on the protractor is great.
No problem with the fit in the mitre slot as the hardwood rail was machined to fit.
    cheers
