Default Mobile bench for my son

I went down to Sydney 3 weeks ago to look after my oldest son after an operation on his jaw. After a week he flew backback to the Gold Coast with me to recuperate for another 2 weeks before flying home today.

I visited his share house while down there and noticed their kitchen was extremely lacking in bench space – the sink only, to cut anything they put a cutting board over it. So I thought I might make him one whilst he was here and he could take it back with him on the plane.

Well I only wanted something cheap, so found an old TV unit at the demolition yard for $20. Simple timber veneered particle board with unglued dowel construction and those aluminium locking pins in the corners. Unlocked the pins, dismantled it, then cut it down to size. I also removed the doors (he wanted an open style, and changed the shelves to variable height on pins (previously it was all dowelled) and widths to suit his microwave. Worked a treat. I then dismantled it again into a flat pack ready for the plane.

Got to the airport and unfortunately it weighed 34 kgs and they only allow up to 32kgs. Mind you, it would have been 30kgs excess, and they wanted $7 per kg:eek:   .

So off he flew back home without it and now I have to find another way to send it down. Any members travelling down to Sydney via the Gold Coast?

    Cheers
    Neil

    G'day Neil,

    Try Busfreight :

    http://busfreight.com.au/retailrates.asp

They have pretty reasonable rates, I got some equipment sent down to me from the gold goast, no dramas at all.

    Cheers,

    Justin.

Thanks for the idea Justin, but unfortunately the buses won't take anything over 20kg. I could split the pack, but then pay double.

Currently the cheapest is a local courier with connections to interstaters for $55, but they deliver to the door which isn't too bad.

    Niel,
go and see Gary Pye, he freighted my excess shopping home for me. A skid with a 30Kg carton of goodies on it. Cost $44 to Cairns depot (about 2000kms).

Sorry about the bum steer Neil, I guess it pays to read the fine print. At least I know what "dead weight" means now

Perhaps try one of the Bne - Syd transport companies - check out at their dispatchers as often it is possible to fit in an extra small item.

I'm still looking at various dispatchers as suggested, even rail. I have prices around the $35 to $40 mark, but have to deliver and pick up from depots. When you add cost of travel to depot (fuel, or bus/train fare for my son) and hassles getting there, the $55 option from door to door looks pretty good.

I'm hoping for a relative to come up for a holiday during winter, then they can take it back for me.
