    Default mortice chisel angle

    Hi all,
Could any one tell me the better chisel angle for chopping out mortices in red gum. The mortice is about 100x35mm I am chopping the corners after drilling to dimension with forstner bit. In doing so chewing the edge of my bench chisel, it is as sharp as you can get off the whet stones with a veritas jig and it only takes a couple of chops and the edge is suffering obviously to fine an edge needs a different angle to give better support to the cutting edge I think I am at about 30deg at the moment any suggestions.
    Regards Rod.

    Hi Rod

Just checked two Japanese and a Ward mortice chisels - all are about 34-35*. My other chisels are about 30*.

I assume that your chisels have reasonable quality steel, not chinese cheese.

    Cheers

A 35* micro-bevel should probably do instead of grinding the whole thing

Thank you for the replies I shall give a couple a touch up in the morning and see how I go with the next couple of chops.

There are some interesting comments in this text (just below the pricing) re. bevel angles:

These are D2 steel (very tough), but the basic gist is that a fairly pronounced 35 degree micro bevel works well with a much shallower primary bevel angle.

Rod, Are these bench chisels rehabbed old ones or recently manufactured? My experience (and probably others) with buying assorted vintage bench chisels, and my even within my own purchases of oval bolstered mortice chisels, is that the steel hardness can vary tremendously. I have several where the edge just folds regardless of the bevel angle. There's no solution except rehardening the steel.

The chisels are a new set of Narex bevel edgehttps://www.timbecon.com.au/carving-chisels/cabinetmaking-chisels/cabinet-chisel-set-of-6-blocked.

    G'day Rod
Keen to hear if you can get the Narex chisels working to your satisfaction, was about to buy a set myself. While a flash set from one of the name manufacturers would be nice, if the quality of the narex chisels is OK the price seems hard to beat. Most of my work is with our local hardwoods and I also want a chisel that can hold an edge putting in a mortice.
