Thread: Motice & Tenon

I think that rounding the tenon to fit the mortice exactly is a waste of time, since the glue in that part of the joint is gluing long grain to end grain, as Silent pointed out. However, the tenon should touch the rounded ends of the mortice at a couple of pointsso that the joint does not rely for its strength entirely on the glue on the tenon cheeks. It is pretty quick to slice off triangular slivers from each corner with a chisel, so that you end up with a tenon shaped like that in the diagram below.

I made some cedar framed flyscreen doors last summer. I made square(in section) tenons a slight interference fit into the rounded mortices. Worked fine, as the voids at the edges were invisible after assembly.

I tend to make my mortice & tenons the same as Rocker if I use the router for the mortices.
Sometimes I square the routed mortices with a chisel and so far have noticed little difference between the two.
One of these days I'll use the morticing machine I bought.
I shouldn't have got so used to using my home made mortice jig.Dewy
